Target

Fortegra, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, is a specialty insurance group offering specialty lines (51%), credit and surety (36%) and warranty and other insurance services (13%) across the US and European markets including the UK and Italy; it is rated A- by AM Best with a long-term combined ratio of about 90%.

Deal rationale

DB Insurance signed on 26 September 2025 to buy 100% of Fortegra from Tiptree and Warburg Pincus for USD 1.65bn (about KRW 2.3tn, 24.6% of its KRW 9.4tn equity) with internal funds, closing on 30 May 2026. Under the goal of 'building a second DB Insurance in the US,' the company said the deal was 'to secure a business base and capabilities as a global insurer,' entering the US and European markets and the global surety market and diversifying risk by country and line to stabilize earnings. Overseas business head Park Ki-hyun said it would pursue both customer value and competitiveness and shareholder value and contribution to the national economy.

Why this matters

It is the first acquisition of a US insurer by a Korean insurer. According to InvestChosun, the price was about 1.75x book value and about 11.8x earnings.

Strategic context

DB Insurance presented the deal as the centrepiece of its plan to “build a second DB Insurance in the US”. According to DB Insurance, Fortegra wrote USD 3.35bn of gross premiums in 2025 and earned USD 160m of net income. Fortegra is a foreign company, so its figures were not checked against DART.

What’s next

The next things to watch are post-merger integration and how far Fortegra’s growth in US specialty insurance lifts DB Insurance’s share of overseas earnings.
